Decolonising Library Reading Lists

Detailed Information

Reading lists are very important tools. They provide the basis of the ideas discussed during lectures and seminars, and they are used as the foundation for essays and assignments. The decision over which texts should be added to a reading list gives power and privilege to some authors and ideas over others. Manchester Met is committed to therefore continually interrogate representation in these list and champion diversification.

In this Third Term placement you will contribute to this activity – with a direct impact on the way in which the library spends its money, and on the collections held. In the activity you will work remotely to:

  • Work with library staff creating and analysing bibliometric datasets expressing diversity in reading lists and collections
  • Make connections between the data and the potential impact on learners and the student curriculum
  • Engage with issues around inclusivity and wider discussions about equality and diversity in higher education
  • Disseminate the output using inventive and exciting methods of communication to relevant audiences (for instance infographics)

Students from any discipline will be able to contribute to this activity – both by supporting the analysis work, and by contributing to the representation and communication of its outcomes in creative ways.
