Rise is a feature of the Manchester Met taught curriculum which enables students to engage with a range of opportunities intended to enhance their experience and employability. In many cases, this involves creating a space to step out of subject-boundaries and engage with interdisciplinary topics which better align our students to the city-region’s employability pathways.
Our intensives are one significant feature of that offer. They are a catalogue of ‘micro-courses’; independent study packages containing text, video and audio which can be accessed at any time on a self-enrolment basis and completed at whatever pace is most appropriate to the learner.
Each intensive is informally certified with a digital badge, and awards students 30 points. Points can also be earned through a range of other opportunities including placements, projects and mobilities. On accrual of 300 points, students within Manchester Met are able to apply for transcript recognition for their extra effort – and, where eligible, to submit a reflective assignment which allows them to gain up to 30 classificatory credits towards their course.
We have designed our Micro-Course so that they can be authored by anyone; staff, students or external partners. The purpose of this course is to introduce potential authors to the approach we take, and to guide them through the process of proposal, development and delivery of a courses idea.
